Lenses?

I really want a new lens. As much as I love my DX 35mm f/1.8 Prime, there's a lot of favors it doesn't do me. It's pretty close for one. I'd like to back up to 24mm at least. Another big one is the quality of glass. At f/1.8 it's not too apparent, but at any other aperture past f/4, it's like looking through old people glasses at a 3D screen....without the 3D effect of course.

*Here's the three lenses I'm considering for the future (sometime by the end of the year?), help me decide by leaving your opinion if you have one in the comments section below! Thanks! I'm terribly indecisive.

[i] 14-24mm f/2.8

PROS:

-extremely wide angle of view (PERFECT for landscapes and street shots)
-zoom lens (slight adjustment to the more standard 24mm is nice)

CONS:

-protruding front element prevents use of protective (or any other kind for that matter) filter
-weighs as much as a tuba full of concrete from what I am told
-bizzare shape might be unweildy
-strange place for a manual focus dial, especially if as weighty as this has a reputation for being

[ii] 24-70mm f/2.8

PROS:

-almost perfect ratings as a standard portraiture workhorse lens
-slightly more affordable than the other two
-attractive wide angle-standard zoom range
-wide aperture (f/2.8) across all focal lengths
-one of the cheapest Nikkor lenses to have an exlusive Nanocrystaline anti-lens flare coat

CONS:

-rather long (although big lenses feel BA as long as they aren't TOO heavy)
-not as wide as the lens above at minimum focal length, not as good of aperture coverage as the prime lens reviewed below

[iii] 24mm fixed focal length f/1.4

PROS:

-greatest pro, of course, is the maximum aperture of f/1.4 (stunning for portraiture and useful for low light conditions)
-prime lenses are reliable (few moving parts)
-24mm, although not my IDEAL is better than my DX 35mm prime for scenery and portraiture
-smallest and lightest (20% shorter and 33% lighter than other two lenses) of the three options

CONS:

-only one of the three that does not have 5 stars: common complaint is a slightly dodgy autofocus
-most expensive of the three options (by $200)
-it doesn't tell jokes or dispense caramels
-okay so that last one was made up, but I got tired of writing knowing no one will probably say anything about it! ha! gotta keep myself laughing~~~

  1. i've gotta say people are probably complaining about the autofocus on the 24mm 1.4 because they don't know how to handle an aperture that big. when you have a huge aperture (and very shallow depth of field as a result) most of your picture is going to be out of focus.

for my favorites of that bunch i would have to say its a tie between the 24mm and the 14-24mm.
